The five yamas and five niyamas of the Yogic path
~an afternoon workshop with Philip Goldberg
The first two limbs of the famous Eight Limbs of Yoga are often overlooked in the West, but they’re powerfully transformative for anyone on a spiritual path. In this workshop, we’ll dive into what they mean and how to apply them in our lives for the most practical benefit.
Because they are about right behavior and appear to constitute an ethical code—and because there happen to be ten of them—the five yamas and five niyamas (limbs one and two) have been called the Ten Commandments of Hinduism. Only they’re not commandments. Nor are they decrees or statutes. The “thou shalt not” tone is blessedly absent, as is any hint of divine punishment. They are more like guidelines or suggestions. The perspective is: behaving in accord with these precepts is of great value to both individual development and the social fabric.
The yamas, sometimes called “don’ts,” are basically things it’s wise to avoid or abstain from. The niyamas, often called “do’s,” are things it’s a good idea to observe or attend to. All ten are subject to interpretation, so we’ll delve into each and discuss how to adapt them to our modern way of life. Everyone will be encouraged to discern the most relevant interpretation and most fruitful application for themselves.
Just being mindful of the yamas and niyamas as we move forward can be a great accelerant on the spiritual journey, regardless of which path we happen to follow.
$30, suggested workshop fee (other options available in person)
