Prayer and Meditation

Sundays 10:15-10:45 AM in the large upstairs classroom.
We offer Sunday morning meditations each week between morning services.  The regular practice of meditation builds peace and calmness within and helps us strengthen our awareness of our connection with the Divine.  Group meditation makes the process easier and helps us move more deeply into the meditation experience.  Please arrive before 10:15 AM as the doors will close to hold the silence for this sacred gathering.

Sunday prayer and meditation is discontinued in the summer (Memorial Day weekend though Labor Day weekend inclusive)

Unity Small Group Ministry

(Now on Zoom – April 2020)

Group Leader: Bill Newman

In the spring of 2019 we initiated a welcoming group, intentionally small in number, to consider a semi-monthly topic and enlightened it with quotes from our favorite authors and Spiritual-minded guides. It has proved popular to revisit those core Unity (God’s) teachings and intimately share with others our own deeper meaningful soul experiences.

We are opening our remaining Spring 2020 2nd and 4th Wednesday meetings to the greater Unity community. Next Zoom session will be on Wed., May 20, continuing on June 3 and 17. Check in is at 10am, and the closing reading is at 11:30am.

To join, send me an email request: william.newman18@gmail.com or call 518-860-2301. The next topics and series of quotations may be centered on these themes: LOVE, the greatest of God’s gifts; GRATITUDE, giving thanks to our Spiritual Source; and COMPASSIONATE EMPATHY, why we are here. We just completed STAYING POSITIVE in times of uncertainty. Be most happy to send a copy on request.

If you’re interested in an alternative time evening meeting, say 6pm to 7:30pm, please let us know which night you may be available and we’ll accommodate as many participants as possible.

A Course in Miracles Study Group

acim-booksPerhaps you have already tried the Course and found it difficult to make it through the text and 365 daily lessons? The Course is challenging, and it is a powerful tool for spiritual growth. And, the metaphysics of the Course are highly compatible with Unity teachings. While the Course is designed for individual study it is helpful to have a “support group” to share your questions, discoveries, and to journey with. Bring your book, or you can view the text for free on a smartphone or tablet.

ACIM Study Group  –  This group, originally begun in the home of our former Pastor Rev. Jim Fuller now meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 7:00 pm at the home of Leslie Coffaro, in Albany (Delaware Ave. area near Spectrum Theater). Email office@unityalbany.org for more info or call Leslie at 518-465-3399. Always open to new students as well as those who have already been working with these teachings. You can find information about A Course in Miracles study groups across the United States, and beyond, at www.miraclecenter.org.

Committee Meetings

5/5: Healing Racism

This group meets on the second Sunday of the month from 12:30 to 2:00 pm.

A small group of people at Unity church in Albany recently began meeting one Sunday a month since the end of April to discuss and begin taking action on the long term task of healing racism in Albany and beyond. The impetus for this group was a 2 day conference called Building the Beloved Community: Racism and Beyond held at the First church of Albany, and sponsored by the FOCUS churches of Albany, Friends for Racial Justice, Capital Area Council of Churches, and First Lutheran Church. UCIA was well represented by eleven interested people including our minister, Rev. Crystal, at this event. The presenters, Sister Patty (a person of color) and Sister Ann Louise (who is white) have been doing this training together for a long time and are members of Pax Christi, a Catholic organization started after WW II that is dedicated to furthering peace through social justice.

If you are interested in becoming more aware of your own biases, white Privilege or internalized racial oppression and educating yourself more about the history of racism and how it has become institutionalized and systemic in our culture, and what you can do in conjunction with FOCUS programs to further the process of healing racism, contact Dottie Frament (dottie_frament@hotmail.com or leave a message at 518-346-7940)

5/5: What’s in a Name?
“5/5” is an abominable historical reference to the “Three-fifths Compromise” of the 1787 US Constitutional Convention. Only 3/5 of the number of slaves would be counted, for the purpose of taxation and representation.

We affirm that not only is EVERYONE a complete and whole “5/5ths” of a person — in Truth all beings are One, United, Indivisible.

Unity EarthCare Committee

We have begun as a ministry to pursue the implementation of the Unity EarthCare Program. Anyone is welcome to join our EarthCare Committee and/or attend meetings on the 3rd Sunday of the month following the 11:00 am (10:00 am in summer) service.

The Unity EarthCare Team, a ministry team of Unity Worldwide Ministries, has designed the Unity EarthCare Program to assist congregations in integrating an earth-oriented spirituality into their ministry.

Fall and/or Spring Retreats

We usually schedule an overnight retreat each autumn, at either the Dominican Retreat House in Niskayuna or the Carondelet Hospitality Center in Latham, NY . They run from Friday evening through Saturday evening dinner. We invite a guest retreat master to lead us each year in a relaxed time of reflection, sharing and community.

At times a Spring retreat may also be held, usually on a Saturday at the church. (Our 2020 Spring Retreat with Rev. Paulette Pipe is an exception, having been rescheduled from Fall 2019.)
