“We cannot despair of humanity,
since we ourselves are human beings.”
-Albert Einstein

I was recently in a line at the post office when I noticed a postal worker coming out. He came out to clean off the tables that people use to get their postage in a packages ready to go out. I hadn’t noticed until he started cleaning how with barely-used trash bins close by, there was an abundance of paper and discarded trash on the tables. When I saw him pushing off a used tissue, I made the comment “People are interesting aren’t they.” He looked at me inquisitively. I said, “It’s a shame that people just leave the used tissues for someone else to clean up even when there are trash bins literally at their feet.” His reply spoke volumes of his character and of his thoughts about humanity. He said, “It would be a pretty boring world if we were all the same.” He didn’t judge behavior – like I was doing. He had a peaceful acceptance about people. He is a wonderful example of the year long spiritual theme that I will speaking about at Sunday services, “One Humanity, Many Stories.

This theme is Unity’s 2019 theme. Unity Church in Albany, and hundreds of other Unity churches will develop talks based on this year-long theme. Each month has a dedicated theme to support the overall theme. With humanity seeming to be in a vulnerable place,  it is important for us to remember that we are one humanity with many stories, we are one with God, we are One.

Unity wrote, “Sometimes it is said that if you knew another person’s story, you couldn’t help but love them. Each of us has known hardship and heartbreak, just as each of us has known joy. Some people have overcome unimaginable adversity while others seem to have been blessed with all a human being could ever want.

“Yet a greater story over-arches them all: We are all one. Despite the appearance of separate bodies, individual personalities, and different pursuits, we are one humanity. Like a prism divides light into a rainbow of colors, we humans express God in infinite ways.

“One God, one humanity, many stories.”

“Humanity has only scratched the surface of its real potential.”
-Peace Pilgrim

The real potential for us as humanity is to know that we all deserve to live in peace, love, harmony, and ecstatic joy. As humanity, we must know that we all have opportunities to live those spiritual truths which could also be considered Heaven here on Earth. And, that heaven here on Earth is not for some of us while others are lacking, while others are hurting, while others are in need. Spiritual truth tells us that we can all experience Heaven here on Earth simultaneously. For this to manifest, we all have to believe in one Humanity and its greatness of good. We must all move forward to do what is best for Humanity and the world. For we are not separate from the earth and all of its creatures. We will experience our joys as humanity once we come to understand that we have to be in sync with the earth and all of its inhabitants. When it is spoken, “We Are One,” it is meant that we are one with all.

It starts with one. It starts with you. It starts with me. Together, as we see the good in humanity, humanity will be what we see it as. Let us shift our consciousness, so that we can be of great benefit to humanity and the world.

“I’m for truth, no matter who tells it.
I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against.
I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such
I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.”
– Malcolm X
